Chia seeds soak up water and turn into a soft gel. That gel is what keeps you full.
How to eat them:
Soak
1 tbsp chia in a glass of water for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once so it does not clump.
Drink or eat
Add lemon and a little honey, or stir into curd, smoothie or overnight oats.
Drink water
Chia needs extra water through the day. Do not eat it dry by the spoonful.
Nutrition (1 tbsp, 12g): about 4 g fibre, 2 g protein, 76 mg calcium and about 2 g omega-3 (ALA), from USDA data.
Chia Seeds for Weight Loss: What Is True
Chia can help, but not the way social media suggests.
- What it does: the fibre and gel make you feel full, so you may eat less at the next meal.
- What it does not do: it does not "burn fat" or melt belly fat on its own.
- How to use it well: have 1 tbsp of soaked chia in water or curd 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, and keep the rest of your diet in check.
A tablespoon is about 58 calories. Three or four spoons a day, plus honey, can quietly work against you.
Flax Seeds (Alsi)
Flax has a hard outer shell. If you eat whole seeds, most pass straight through and you lose the benefits.
How to eat them:
Roast lightly
Dry roast on low flame for 2 to 3 minutes until they start to crackle.
Grind
Grind in small batches in a mixer.
Store cold
Keep ground flax in an airtight jar in the fridge and use within 2 weeks. It goes rancid quickly.
Use
Add 1 tbsp to atta for rotis, sprinkle on dal, curd, raita or poha.
Nutrition (1 tbsp ground, 7g): about 2 g fibre and 1.6 g omega-3 (ALA). Flax is one of the richest plant sources of omega-3.

The easiest of the three. No soaking or grinding needed.

- Eat a small handful plain as a snack.
- Dry roast for 3 to 4 minutes with a pinch of salt and chaat masala.
- Sprinkle on salads, poha, upma, khichdi or soup.
- Add to homemade ladoos or chikki.
Nutrition (30g): about 9 g protein, 2.6 mg iron and 177 mg magnesium (USDA). That is more protein than any nut.
A Simple Daily Seed Routine
| Time | What to have |
|---|---|
| Morning | 1 tbsp chia soaked in water with lemon |
| Lunch | 1 tbsp ground flax in atta or sprinkled on dal |
| Evening | A small handful of roasted pumpkin seeds |
Who Should Be Careful
- People on blood thinners or diabetes medicines: flax and chia can affect these. Check with your doctor.
- Sensitive stomachs: start with 1 tsp and increase slowly. Too much fibre too fast causes bloating.
- Anyone with trouble swallowing: never eat dry chia seeds followed by water; always soak them first.
