How to get the best dates for your money
Compare price per kg
A 250g pack at ₹449 is ₹1,796/kg; a 1 kg pack of the same dates is often 10-20% cheaper per kg. Divide the price by the weight before you compare.
Variety matters more than brand
Medjool and Ajwa cost 2-3 times more than Kimia or Kalmi because of size, softness and demand. Pick the variety for the use: Kimia for daily eating, Ajwa for Ramadan and gifting, Medjool for stuffing and premium snacking.
Soft dates need the fridge
Moist dates like Kimia and Medjool keep best in the fridge after opening. Drier dates like Kalmi and Ajwa are fine in an airtight jar in a cool place.
Check for added sugar or syrup
Good dates are naturally sweet. Very sticky, shiny dates may be coated in syrup. Read the label: the only ingredient should be dates.
Which dates should you buy?
Each variety suits a different use, so the cheapest is not always the best value.
- •Daily family eating, kids, milk and kheer: Kimia (Mazafati) black dates, the best value soft date.
- •Ramadan, gifting and a mild, less sugary taste: Ajwa dates.
- •Premium snacking, stuffing with nuts and date shakes: Medjool dates.
- •Cooking, chutney and laddoos in bulk: Deglet Noor, Zahidi or Kalmi.
