The One Thing to Know About Flax
Whole flax seeds have a hard shell. Most of them pass through your body without being digested, so you miss the good stuff. Grind them first. A small mixer jar does the job in seconds.

One tablespoon of ground flax (about 7 g) has roughly:
| Nutrient | Per tablespoon ground (7 g) |
|---|---|
| Calories | 37 kcal |
| Fibre | 1.9 g |
| Protein | 1.3 g |
| Omega-3 (ALA) | about 1.6 g |
Per 100 g, flax has more ALA omega-3 than any other common seed, about 22 g. Values from USDA FoodData Central.
What Flax Seeds Help With
Heart health. The ALA in flax and its fibre are both linked to healthier cholesterol levels when eaten regularly.
Digestion. Flax has both soluble and insoluble fibre. It helps keep things regular, especially with enough water.
Lignans. Flax is the richest food source of lignans, plant compounds that are being studied for hormone balance. The research is still early, so treat this as a bonus, not a reason on its own.
Feeling full. Like chia, the fibre slows digestion and can help with snacking between meals.
How Much to Eat
1 to 2 tablespoons of ground flax a day is plenty. Start with 1 teaspoon if you are new to it.

In roti dough
Add 1 tbsp ground flax to the atta for 4 rotis. Nobody will notice.
On curd or dal
Sprinkle a spoon on top just before eating.
Alsi chutney
Roast lightly, grind with garlic, red chilli and salt. A classic in UP and Maharashtra.
In a smoothie
Blend a spoon into any fruit smoothie.
Store ground flax in a closed jar in the fridge and use it within two weeks, because the oil in it goes stale quickly. Grinding a week's worth at a time works well.
Who Should Be Careful
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women: ask your doctor first, as advice varies.
- People on blood thinners: large amounts may add to the effect. Check with your doctor.
- Anyone with a bowel blockage history: avoid high fibre seeds unless your doctor agrees.
Flax or Chia?
Flax has more omega-3 and is cheaper. Chia is easier to use because you do not need to grind it. Many people keep both. Read our chia vs flax comparison for a side by side. You can buy raw flax seeds or the chia and flax combo.
