Chia Seeds Benefits: What They Do, How Much to Eat and Who Should Be Careful

Chia seeds are mostly fibre, with omega-3, calcium and some protein. Here is what that actually does for you, how much to eat in a day and when to go slow.

Founder's Note

From Mohit, founder of Chau Foods

Hi, I am Mohit from Chau Foods. Chia is the one seed I tell everyone to try, because it is so easy. A spoon in water at night, drink it in the morning, done. Just do not expect miracles in a week. It is a fibre habit, and like any habit, it works when you keep at it.

Values from USDA FoodData Central. Most of what makes chia useful is the fibre. A third of the seed by weight is fibre, which is more than almost any other food you will find in a kitchen.

1. It keeps you full. Soaked chia turns into a soft gel. That gel sits in your stomach longer, so a spoon in water or curd before a meal often means you eat a little less.

2. It helps with constipation. The same fibre adds bulk and holds water. Many people notice easier mornings within a week, as long as they also drink enough water.

3. Plant omega-3. Chia is one of the richest plant sources of ALA, the omega-3 found in seeds. It is not the same as the omega-3 in fish oil, and your body converts only a small part of it, but it still counts towards a healthy fat intake.

4. Calcium for people who skip dairy. Two tablespoons give about 150 mg of calcium. Not a replacement for milk or curd, but a helpful top up.

5. Steadier blood sugar after meals. Fibre slows down how fast carbs reach your blood. Adding chia to a meal can make the rise after eating a bit gentler.

How Much Chia to Eat in a Day

1

Start small

1 teaspoon a day for the first week.

2

Normal amount

1 to 2 tablespoons a day, soaked.

3

Drink water

Have an extra glass or two of water through the day.

How to Eat Chia

Always soak it. A spoon in a glass of water, nimbu pani, milk or curd for 15 to 20 minutes is enough. You can also stir it into overnight oats or a smoothie. For more ideas, see our guide on how to eat chia, flax and pumpkin seeds.

  • People with a sensitive stomach: too much too soon can cause gas and bloating. Go slow.
  • Anyone on blood thinners or blood sugar medicine: talk to your doctor before making chia a daily habit.
  • Children: never give dry chia seeds to small kids. Soak them first.

Buying Chia Seeds

Good chia is clean, dry and mostly black and grey with a few white seeds. Avoid packs with dust, stones or a musty smell. Our raw chia seeds come in a 150 g pack, and the chia and flax combo is good if you want both.
