Quick Summary
Quick Answer
Most almonds sold in India are California almonds, grown in the USA. They are flat, smooth and light brown, and they are what most families eat daily. Mamra and Gurbandi are smaller, more curved and oilier almonds from Iran and Afghanistan, sold at a premium. Kashmiri almonds are grown in India and often sold in thin paper shells.
All of them are real almonds with very similar nutrition. The differences are mainly taste, oil, size and price.

| Type | Where from | How it looks | Taste | Price (relative) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California (Nonpareil) | USA | Flat, smooth, light brown, uniform | Mild, clean | Most affordable |
| California (other varieties) | USA | Slightly darker or rounder | Mild | Usually cheaper than Nonpareil |
| Gurbandi | Afghanistan | Small, dark, wrinkled | Rich, slightly bitter edge | Higher |
| Mamra | Iran and Afghanistan | Small, curved, boat-shaped, deep ridges | Very rich, oily, sweet | Highest, often 2 to 3 times California |
| Kashmiri (Kagzi) | Jammu and Kashmir | Sold in thin, paper-like shells | Sweet, fresh | Mid to high |
California Almonds
Nonpareil is the variety most people picture: a flat kernel with smooth, light skin. Other California varieties are a little darker or rounder and cost less. In Indian markets you will also hear trade names such as Sanora, usually used for large, flat California-grown kernels.
Good for: daily soaking, kids' tiffins, badam milk, baking and gifting. They give you the full nutrition of almonds at the most sensible price.
Mamra Almonds
Mamra are small and curved, almost like a boat, with deep wrinkles. They feel oilier when you bite them and taste noticeably richer. Because supply is limited, they cost much more.
Good for: people who love the taste and want a premium almond, traditional badam preparations, and special gifts.
Watch out: Mamra is the most faked almond in India. Real Mamra is small and concave. If "Mamra" looks large and flat, it is probably a cheaper almond with a premium label.
Gurbandi Almonds

Gurbandi sit between California and Mamra. They are small and darker, with a strong flavour and sometimes a mild bitter note. Some families prefer them for winter preparations like pinni and panjiri.
Kashmiri Almonds
These are grown in the Kashmir valley and are often sold in thin "kagzi" (paper) shells you can crack with your fingers. Supply is small and quality varies a lot from batch to batch.
Is One Type Healthier?
Not in any way that matters for daily eating. Per 100g, almonds give about 21g of protein, 25mg of vitamin E and 12g of fibre (USDA). Mamra has a little more oil, which is why it tastes richer, but you would not notice a health difference from a daily handful.
So the practical answer: eat California almonds daily, and buy Mamra only if you love the taste or want a special gift.
How to Check Quality, Whatever the Type
Snap test
A fresh almond snaps cleanly. A soft, bendy one is old or stored in damp conditions.
Smell
It should smell faintly sweet. A sharp or paint-like smell means the oil has gone rancid.
Colour
Even colour across the pack. Lots of very dark or broken pieces lower the grade.
Bitterness
Sweet almonds should not taste bitter. Spit out any strongly bitter kernel.
Which Do We Sell?
