California almonds are the most common almonds in India. They are large, evenly sized and mild in taste, and they offer the best value for daily eating.
Mamra badam come mainly from Iran and Afghanistan. They are smaller, more curved and have a higher natural oil content. Many families prefer them for soaking and for children. Because supply is small, mamra usually costs several times more than California almonds. We do not stock mamra at the moment.
Gurbandi badam are small Afghan almonds with a stronger, slightly bitter taste. They sit between California and mamra in price.
For a full comparison, read mamra vs gurbandi vs California almonds.
Is Costlier Badam Better?
Not always. For daily eating, smoothies and cooking, good California almonds give you almost the same nutrition at a much lower price. Mamra is a preference, not a requirement.
How to Check Almonds
Size
Even sized kernels mean better grading. Lots of broken pieces mean a lower grade.
Colour
Light to medium brown skin. Very dark or patchy skin can mean old stock.
Snap
A fresh almond snaps cleanly. A soft, bendy almond has absorbed moisture.
Taste
Mild and slightly sweet. A bitter or stale taste means rancid oil.

This guide is written and fact-checked by the Chau Foods editorial team - a small group of FSSAI-certified food specialists based in Rohini, Delhi. Led by founder Mohit, the team combines direct farm-sourcing experience (California almonds, Bihar makhana from Darbhanga & Madhubani, Kashmir walnuts, Kerala spices) with hands-on quality control at the Chau Foods packing facility. We publish only what we would feed our own families, cite Indian nutrition data where relevant, and refresh every article when sourcing, pricing, or health guidelines change.
