What "Suta" Means
Makhana (phool makhana, fox nut) is sorted by size after popping. In Bihar's makhana trade, the size is called suta. A higher suta number means bigger pops.
| Grade | Size | Typical use | Bihar wholesale (indicative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 suta | Small to medium | Kheer, curries, cooking | ₹800-1,000 per kg |
| 5 suta | Medium to large | Roasting, everyday snacking | ₹1,000-1,200 per kg |
| 6 suta and above | Large, "jumbo" | Gifting, premium snack packs | ₹1,200-1,500 per kg |
Bigger pops look better and roast more evenly, so they cost more. The nutrition is the same across grades.
Why 1 Kg of Makhana Looks So Big

Makhana is very light. 1 kg of popped makhana fills a large bag, roughly 25-30 cups. A 150 g pack is about 4 cups, enough for 5-6 snack servings of 25-30 g.
That is why retail makhana is usually sold in 100-250 g packs, and why price per kg looks high compared with nuts. You are buying volume, not weight.
What Makhana Costs Online
Small packs (100-250 g)
About ₹1,200-1,800 per kg. You pay more per kg for convenience and packaging.
Medium packs (450-500 g)
About ₹800-900 per kg. Best value for a family.
1 kg packs
About ₹800 per kg, but makhana goes soft quickly once opened, so only buy 1 kg if you will finish it in a few weeks.
Our handpicked Bihar makhana is ₹179 for 150 g, ₹299 for 2 packs and ₹399 for 3 packs (450 g, under ₹900 per kg), with free delivery on the 3-pack.
Which Grade Should You Buy?
- Roasting with ghee and salt: 5 suta. Big enough to look good, best value.
- Kheer, raita, curry: 4 suta is fine. Size does not matter once it is cooked.
- Gifting or guests: 6 suta. The large white pops look premium in a jar.
- Fasting (vrat): any grade. Makhana is a common phalahar food.
How to Check Quality

- 1Colour: white to off-white. Yellow or brown spots mean old stock.
- 2Weight: it should feel almost weightless. Heavy makhana has absorbed moisture.
- 3Crunch: press one between your fingers. It should crack, not squash.
- 4Smell: neutral. A musty smell means it was stored damp.
- 5Unpopped seeds: a few hard black seeds are normal. Lots of them means poor sorting.

How to Store Makhana
Keep it in an airtight jar away from the stove. If it goes soft, dry-roast it in a pan for 2-3 minutes and it will crisp up again. Do not refrigerate raw makhana.
