What the W Number Means
Cashew grades come from the international grading system. W stands for "white wholes", whole cashews that are not broken or scorched. The number is roughly how many kernels make up one pound (about 454 g).

Most 1 kg "value packs" on Amazon at ā¹850-950 are W320. If a pack does not say the grade, assume W320 or lower.
Is There Any Nutrition Difference?
No. W180, W240 and W320 come from the same kind of cashew and have the same protein, fat and minerals per 100 g. You pay for size, looks and fewer broken pieces, not for nutrition.
Which Grade Should You Buy?
Daily snacking
W320 is fine. W240 if you want bigger, crunchier bites.
Kaju katli, gravies, cooking
Broken cashews or W450. They get ground or cooked anyway.
Roasting with masala
W240. Bigger kernels roast evenly and do not burn.
Gifting and Diwali boxes
W240 or W180. Size matters when the box is opened.

- 1Colour: even, creamy white. Yellow or grey kernels are old.
- 2Shape: whole, unbroken kernels. A W240 pack should have very few halves.
- 3Snap: a fresh cashew snaps cleanly. A soft or chewy one has absorbed moisture.
- 4Smell: mild and sweet. A sharp or oily smell means it has gone rancid.
