Founder's Note

From Mohit, founder of Chau Foods

Hi, I am Mohit from Chau Foods. People are often surprised that makhana is not a protein food. It is a light, filling snack, and that is its real strength. Roast plain makhana in a teaspoon of ghee and you have a great evening snack. Flavoured jars are for the days you want taste without cooking, just keep it to one bowl.

Quick Summary

Quick Answer

Plain makhana has about 347 kcal and 9.7 g protein per 100 g. Because it is so light, a cup of plain makhana weighs only about 14 g, which is roughly 50 kcal and 1.4 g protein.

Roasting in ghee and adding seasoning changes the numbers a lot, so it matters which makhana you are eating.

Plain makhana values are from the Indian Food Composition Tables. Flavoured values are from the label on our Peri Peri, Onion n Cream and Tangy Tomato jars.

Why Flavoured Makhana Has More Calories

Flavoured makhana is roasted with oil so the seasoning sticks. On our jars that brings fat to 23.4 g per 100 g, against almost none in plain makhana. The seasoning also adds salt and a little sugar.

That does not make it a bad snack. A 28 g serving is still about 143 kcal, similar to a small packet of biscuits but with more crunch per calorie and no deep frying.

Is Makhana High in Protein?

Not really. At about 2 to 3 g per bowl, makhana is a light snack, not a protein source. If protein is your goal:

  • Pair it with curd, a glass of milk or a handful of almonds.
  • Try a mix like our Roasted Millet Mix Namkeen, which has 16.8 g protein per 100 g because it includes almonds, seeds and dal.

How Much Makhana to Eat

1

Plain makhana

1 to 2 cups (about 15 to 30 g) as an evening snack is a sensible portion.

2

Ghee roasted

Use 1 tsp ghee for 2 cups. More ghee adds calories fast.

3

Flavoured

One small bowl (about 28 g) at a time, not straight from the jar.
