Founder's Note

From Mohit, founder of Chau Foods

Hi, I am Mohit from Chau Foods. With kids, the trick is variety and small portions, not perfect food. A handful of makhana or a few almonds with a fruit beats a packet of cream biscuits every day of the week. And please do check your school's nut rules, many are strict now.

What Makes a Good Kids' Snack

A good snack keeps a child going until the next meal without a sugar crash. Look for three things:

  • Some fibre or protein: fruit, nuts, makhana, millet or dal based snacks.
  • Not too much sugar or salt: check the label, especially on biscuits and namkeen.
  • Easy to eat: no sticky fingers in a school tiffin.

Allergy Points for School

Many schools are nut free, and some packaged snacks contain nuts even when you would not expect it. On our jars, for example:

  • Flavoured makhana and beetroot chips contain peanut.
  • Roasted millet mix contains almonds.
  • Ragi chips may contain traces of gluten, sesame and tree nuts.

Always check the label and your school's rules before packing anything with nuts.

  • Sweet biscuits and cream biscuits, which are high in sugar.
  • Fried namkeen, which is high in salt and fat.
  • Packaged juices, even "no added sugar" ones. A whole fruit is better.

Where to Buy

Our snacks section has makhana in three flavours, ragi chips, beetroot chips and a millet mix, all in resealable jars that fit a tiffin routine. For dry fruits, see almonds and raisins.
