Many people with diabetes can eat a small number of dates, as part of a planned meal, with their doctor's agreement.
The reason dates are not as risky as they look: their glycemic index is low to medium. A 2011 study in Nutrition Journal tested five date varieties in healthy and diabetic volunteers and found GI values of about 36-50, with no harmful spikes in the diabetic group after a measured portion. The fibre slows how fast the sugar enters the blood.
The reason to still be careful: dates are about two-thirds sugar by weight. One Medjool date has about 16g of sugar, a small date about 4-5g. Eat too many and the total sugar adds up, whatever the GI.
How Many Dates Can a Diabetic Eat in a Day?
- 1-2 small dates (Kimia, Ajwa) or 1 Medjool, once a day.
- Count them as carbohydrate in that meal (2 small dates is about 12-14g carbohydrate).
- Pair them with protein or fat: 4-5 almonds, a walnut, or a bowl of curd.
- Avoid dates on an empty stomach, in sweet shakes with added sugar, or as a large handful.
- Check your sugar 2 hours after eating dates the first few times to see your own response.
Dates for Weight Loss
Dates can fit into weight loss if they replace something less nutritious:
- Swap a biscuit, toffee or sweet for 1-2 dates. You save calories and get fibre.
- Keep to 2 small dates or 1 Medjool a day.
- Eat them with a few nuts so they keep you full longer.
- Do not add dates on top of your usual sweets, and do not snack from the box.
Dates are not a fat-burning food. They help only by making a healthier sweet easier to stick to.
