Founder's Note

From Mohit, founder of Chau Foods

Hi, I am Mohit from Chau Foods. In my family the elders swear by kali kishmish soaked overnight, and the kids only eat the golden ones. Nutrition wise they are very close, so pick the one you will actually eat. We sell golden kishmish because it is what most of our customers use in cooking.

Per 100 g, USDA data shows dark and golden raisins are almost the same:

NutrientDark raisinsGolden raisins
Caloriesabout 299 kcalabout 302 kcal
Fibreabout 3.7 gabout 4 g
Ironabout 1.9 mgabout 1.8 mg
Potassiumabout 750 mgabout 750 mg

The main difference is colour. Darker raisins keep more of the grape skin's natural pigments, which are antioxidants. Golden raisins sold commercially are sometimes treated with sulphur dioxide to keep their colour, so check the label if you avoid sulphites.

About Raisins and Iron

You will often read that black raisins are great for iron. The numbers say otherwise. Ten raisins weigh about 5 g and carry around 0.1 mg of iron, a tiny part of what an adult needs each day. Raisins are a healthy sweet snack, but not an iron source you can rely on. For iron, dal, green leafy vegetables and pumpkin seeds do far more.

Benefits Both Share

  • Natural energy: quick sugar from fruit, useful before a walk or for kids after school.
  • Fibre: helps digestion, especially when soaked overnight.
  • Better than sweets: a handful of raisins satisfies a sweet craving with no added sugar.

Raisins are high in natural sugar, so people with diabetes should keep to a small handful.

  • For soaking and eating in the morning: either works. Many families prefer black for tradition.
  • For cooking, kheer and kids: golden, for the milder taste and colour.

Our premium raisins are golden kishmish, sun dried with no added sugar or sulphur. For the soaking routine, read soaked raisins benefits. Raisins also come in our cashew and raisins and makhana and raisins combos.
