Sargi is the meal eaten before sunrise, traditionally sent by the mother-in-law. It has one practical job: to keep you going for a long day without food or water. So the best sargi is filling, slow to digest and not too salty.
Dry fruits are a big part of most sargi thalis for exactly this reason. They are small, easy to eat at 4 AM, and they release energy slowly.
Best Dry Fruits for Sargi
| Dry fruit | Why it helps during the fast | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Soaked almonds | Protein and good fats keep you full for longer | 6 to 8 |
| Walnuts | Slow energy, easy on the stomach | 2 to 3 halves |
| Anjeer | Fibre and natural sweetness, gentle energy | 2, soaked |
| Makhana | Light, filling and not salty if roasted plain | A small bowl |
| Dates or raisins | Quick energy to start the day | 2 dates or a few raisins |
| Coconut water or milk | Hydration before the fast begins | 1 glass |
Soak the almonds and anjeer the night before, so they are soft and easy to digest in the morning.
What to Avoid in Sargi
- Very salty food such as namkeen and salted nuts. Salt makes you thirsty through the day.
- Too much sugar. Lots of mithai gives a quick high and then a slump by noon.
- Tea and coffee in large amounts, which can dehydrate you.
- Fried food that sits heavy on the stomach.
Plain roasted makhana and unsalted almonds are better picks than salted mixes.
