Founder's Note

From Mohit, founder of Chau Foods

Getting my FSSAI license was the best Rs 2,000 I ever spent. Before the license, I could only sell in local markets. After getting it, Amazon accepted my products, corporate clients started ordering, and retailers trusted me enough to display my products prominently. The process took me 45 days, and I made one mistake β€” I applied for Basic Registration first, then had to upgrade to State License within 6 months when turnover crossed Rs 12 lakh. My advice: if you are serious about this business, go directly for State License. The fee difference is negligible but it saves you months of paperwork later.

Why You Need an FSSAI License for Dry Fruits Business

Every food business in India β€” including dry fruits retail, wholesale, online selling, and even home-based operations β€” legally requires an FSSAI license under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Operating without one can result in fines up to Rs 5 lakh and even imprisonment up to 6 months.

But beyond legal compliance, an FSSAI license builds customer trust. The FSSAI logo on your packaging tells buyers that your products meet food safety standards. For wholesale, most retailers and online platforms (Amazon, Flipkart) will not even accept your products without a valid FSSAI number.

Types of FSSAI Licenses

1. FSSAI Basic Registration

  • For whom: Small businesses with annual turnover below Rs 12 lakh
  • Examples: Home-based dry fruits seller, small retail shop, market stall
  • Fee: Rs 100 per year
  • Validity: 1-5 years (choose at application)
  • Processing time: 7-30 days
  • 2. FSSAI State License

  • For whom: Businesses with annual turnover Rs 12 lakh to Rs 20 crore
  • Examples: Medium wholesaler, multi-city distributor, online brand
  • Fee: Rs 2,000-5,000 per year (varies by state)
  • Validity: 1-5 years
  • Processing time: 30-60 days
  • 3. FSSAI Central License

  • For whom: Large businesses with turnover above Rs 20 crore, or importers/exporters
  • Examples: National distributor, exporter, importer
  • Fee: Rs 7,500 per year
  • Validity: 1-5 years
  • Processing time: 30-60 days
  • Documents Required

    For Basic Registration:

  • Aadhaar card of proprietor
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Proof of business address (rent agreement/electricity bill)
  • For State License (additional):

  • PAN card
  • Partnership deed / MOA-AOA (if company)
  • Food safety management plan
  • List of food products to be handled
  • Layout plan of processing/storage area
  • Water test report (if applicable)
  • NOC from municipality/panchayat
  • Step-by-Step Online Application Process

Step 1: Visit foscos.fssai.gov.in β€” this is the official FSSAI online portal.

Step 2: Click on "Apply for License/Registration" and create an account with your email and mobile number.

Step 3: Select the appropriate license type (Basic/State/Central) based on your turnover.

Step 4: Fill in business details β€” name, type, address, food categories (select "Dry Fruits and Nuts" under food category).

Step 5: Upload required documents in PDF/JPG format (max 1MB each).

Step 6: Pay the fee online (UPI, net banking, debit/credit card accepted).

Step 7: Submit the application. You will receive an Application Reference Number (ARN).

Step 8: For Basic Registration, the license is usually generated automatically within 7 days. For State/Central licenses, a food safety officer may visit your premises for inspection.

Step 9: Download your FSSAI license from the portal once approved.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    1. Wrong license type β€” If your turnover exceeds Rs 12 lakh, a Basic Registration is not valid. Apply for State License from the start to avoid penalties later.

    2. Incorrect food category β€” Select all relevant categories. If you sell dry fruits AND spices, select both. Adding categories later requires a modification application.

    3. Address mismatch β€” Your FSSAI license address must match your actual business/storage address. Multiple locations need separate licenses.

    4. Expiry without renewal β€” FSSAI licenses expire after the validity period. Apply for renewal 30 days before expiry. Expired licenses attract penalties.

    5. Not displaying the license β€” The FSSAI license number MUST be displayed on all packaging, shop signage, and online listings. This is a legal requirement.

FSSAI Compliance Tips for Dry Fruits Business

  • Maintain a food safety logbook recording batch numbers, purchase dates, and supplier details
  • Conduct basic quality checks β€” visual inspection for mold, insects, foreign particles
  • Ensure proper storage β€” cool, dry area away from direct sunlight, separate from non-food items
  • Keep pest control records β€” regular fumigation of storage area
